#BEEUnited: one dollar, one million voices

Justice for Miss B’s

Landlords Chris and Dori Carter of GreenOrange Lillie LLC leased 2500 Lillie Avenue to Miss B’s for a child daycare center and pre-school education, the use written into the lease. Miss B’s alleges the landlords knew the County had not approved the main building for commercial use, leased it anyway, then refused to allow the permits Miss B’s needed to open. Then came a Three Day Notice to Pay Rent or Quit, and a lawsuit. Hundreds of thousands invested, and not one child through the doors. Miss B’s has answered with a cross complaint, and continues to invest in legal fees to defend its position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answered by Sara B

Sara Brennan, founder of Miss B’s Children’s Club, on the swing

Can you still use the building?

  • No. That is why we filed a cross complaint against the landlords and are pursuing justice for Miss B’s.

Why did you invest so much in a building you didn’t own?

  • I acted in good faith, believing what the landlords told me. Child daycare and pre-school education was the agreed use, written into the lease, and the landlords managed the property.

What happened

  1. The lease and the investment

Landlords Chris and Dori Carter of GreenOrange Lillie LLC leased 2500 Lillie Avenue to Miss B’s in March 2025 for a child daycare center and pre-school education, the use written into the lease. Miss B’s invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in improvements. Santa Barbara County’s enforcement file on the property opens in 2015, ten years before Miss B’s arrived, and in December 2025 the County issued a Notice of Violation for the premises. Miss B’s alleges the landlords knew the County had not approved the main building for commercial use, leased it anyway, and did not disclose it.

  2. The dispute

Miss B’s alleges the landlords refused to allow the permits Miss B’s needed to open. In March 2026 the landlords served a Three Day Notice to Pay Rent or Quit, and Miss B’s returned possession of the premises. On April 1, 2026, the landlords sued Miss B’s and Sara Brennan. On April 29, Miss B’s filed its cross complaint, alleging fraud and concealment. In September 2026 the previous tenant filed its own claim against the same landlords.

  3. Where we are today

#BEEUnited launched in September 2026 and our community is standing together. Miss B’s continues to invest in legal fees to defend its position, and is looking for pop up locations while it does. The filings are public, and neither side’s claims have been decided.

  • Third tenantMiss B’sFiled a civil claim on April 29, 2026.Case No. 26CV02027

Both civil cases were filed with the Santa Barbara Superior Court in 2026. In each, the tenant alleges fraud against the landlords.

OUR SIDE OF THE STORY

Miss B’s Cross Complaint

Miss B’s leased 2500 Lillie Avenue with its agreed use written into the lease as a “child daycare center and pre-school education.”

We allege the landlords, Chris and Dori Carter, and their company GreenOrange Lillie LLC, refused to allow the permits Santa Barbara County requires, so Miss B’s could not open.

When the landlords sued, Miss B’s filed a cross complaint, its own claims against them, with the Santa Barbara Superior Court on April 29, 2026. Read it in full below.

We share this so you can see for yourself why we are standing up, for Miss B’s and for every small business that deserves to be heard.
